Tutorial: Peeling paint with Adobe Photoshop
Part 1: Preparing the Car
Download the source files HERE then unzip. You should have two images, car.jpg and paint.jpg Open both of these in photoshop.

We are going to start with the car image so go ahead and save as car.psd or whatever you would like to name your file.

The first thing we need to do is create a mask so that our effect only covers the painted portions of the car that we want peeling.

  • Duplicate your background layer
  • Click the layer mask icon located at the bottom of your layers palette
  • Now that you are on the mask select the magnetic lasso tool
  • We plan on making the paint on the side of the car peel so lets make our mask here. Make a selection of the side of the car by outlining it with the magnetic lasso tool, clean up your selection if needed and remove trim and windows from it by holding down the ALT key and going around them with the magnetic lasso.
  • Your selection should look something like mine pictured below.
  • Finish your mask by selecting black as your foreground color then use the fill tool to fill in your selection, you should see the part of the car you selected is black on the thumbnail of your layer mask on the layers palette, shown in the second image below.
Part 2: Peeling Paint
Your car should still have a selection on it and you should still be on the mask, for now lets keep the selection but click on the background layer.
Now minimize your car.psd file and go to your paint.jpg file, select all or CTRL+A. At this point you can do one of two things. You can copy CTRL+C and paste into your selection SHIFT+CTRL+V on your car.psd file. Or if your an experienced photoshop user and want to save system resources you can drag the paint image onto your car.psd file and it will do the same thing. Either way your peeling paint is in your masked area.

Now if you like you can rename your paint layer. We are going to make that paint look a little more real now just follow these steps.

  • Be sure you are on the layer with your paint image and it is under the mask.
  • Press CTRL+T or go to Edit>Free Transform
  • Refer to my screenshot below and insert numbers on the top of the screen if you would like to copy exactly how I did mine or scale yours as you see fit.
  • Change your layer mode on the paint layer to Vivid Light
  • Now are seeing more realistic results already but the paint is red and the background doesnt exactly look like the car so lets fix that.
  • Select the magic wand tool or press W
  • Change tolerance at the top of the screen to 65 and select all the areas that are not peeling paint, once you have done this press delete to make it disapear leaving you with only peeling paint. Zoom in and clean up with the erase tool if you need to. (See image 2 below for help)
  • Almost done, double click your layer just to the right of the layer name and a Layer Style window will open, you can choose your styles by clicking on them on your left.
  • Click Color Overlay, now change your color to a grey, I used R-174 G-173 B-173
  • Change the blend mode on that same window to Color then click Ok
ALL DONE! You can go back now and clean up areas that need attention or save it as is, you can do this to other cars and just change the color of the paint with the Color Overlay Layer Style my PSD file is HERE in case you need to refer to it for troubleshooting purposes.
